Southern Maine’s early cemeteries are rich with folk art and sculpture. Beautifully hand-carved gravestones created by local stonecutters are readily found throughout our region. But what do the gravestone images of urns & willows, skulls & crossed bones, and pointing fingers really mean? In this heavily-illustrated presentation, cemetery historian and author Ron Romano will explain the meanings of symbols, discuss the types of materials and monuments found in our old burying grounds, and highlight a unique form of grave marker — the billboard monument — four of which are found in Wells and Ogunquit and featured in his latest book.
Following the presentation, Ron will be happy to take your questions about cemeteries, gravestones and monuments found right here in our towns. If you’d like to read Ron’s new book in advance of the presentation, the Historical Society bookshop is well-stocked with autographed copies of “Billboard Monuments of Maine.”Tell a Friend
