Sixty-two square miles
comprise the Town of Wells which has a year round population of about
10,000. The town has several different sections with interesting names.
The most southern coastal area of Wells is Moody Beach, next is Wells
Beach, and the most northerly beach is at Drakes Island. To the west are
High Pine, Wells Branch, and the Merriland Ridge area. Together, these
areas make up the Town of Wells!
The Wells Police Department
includes a Patrol Division, a Detective and Youth Affairs Bureau, and a
Communication Division providing 24 hour emergency service and
information. The Wells Fire Department consists of both full-time career
firefighters as well as volunteer firefighters and a full-time Fire
Chief. Wells Emergency Medical Service (WEMS) provides 24 hour-a-day
ambulance service and has a full-time director and 42 per diem
employees.
Most of the population along
U.S. Route 1 and the ocean is served by public water from the Kennebunk,
Kennebunkport, and Wells Water District, and by public sewer through the
Wells Sanitary District. A recycling and transfer station takes refuse
from property taxpayers (a sticker is required) and from the several
independent collectors. Cable service is provided for most of Wells by
Time Warner.
Tourism plays an important part in the livelihood of the town. Visitors will find a wide selection of fine
hotels and motels, campgrounds, restaurants, gift and antique
shops, and recreational facilities. In addition, there are many
bed and breakfasts in the area which offer a unique experience for visitors. There
is a large service industry in the area, which includes carpenters,
painters, farmers, repairmen, etc. Professional services, such as
accounting, legal work, banking, etc., are also plentiful.
More detailed information on
Wells can be obtained in the Town's Annual Report published in time for

The Wells Public Library provides information and services for the residents of the community in their pursuit of educational, cultural, personal and recreational needs. The library accomplishes this by collecting, organizing and disseminating information in a variety of formats while working with other agencies to serve the diverse needs of the community.
The first library in Wells was dedicated in February 1979 to Ethel Weymouth, a committed teacher who devoted her life to education. In 1992, additional space was provided for a larger children's area, a new young adult area, new fiction area, and a meeting room.
Today the 11,000 square foot library houses over 44,000 titles in the following formats: books, magazines, newspapers, audio books on cassette and CD, videocassettes and DVDs, music CDs, and family multimedia activity kits. This includes a Parent/Teacher collection, Large Print collection, and up-to-date reference material. Patrons also enjoy free access to over 48 online subscription databases for full text magazine/newspaper articles, and other pertinent information.
The library provides free access to the Internet, as well as wireless access and computers for word processing and multimedia computers for CD-ROM game use.
During the school year, the library offers weekly programs for babies, toddlers, and preschoolers. Throughout the year, programs are offered for school-aged children and young adults as well as for families and adults. The summer reading programs offer incentives and special events for residents and vacationers. Passes to area museums, a meeting room for civic groups, and a community bulletin board are also available.
An active Friends of the Wells Pubic Library group sponsors an on-going book sale in the library, as well as an annual summer book sale, a fall craft show, and many library programs and events. The Friends also sponsor our 2 Art Galleries. The Ethel M. Weymouth Art Gallery features rotating exhibits by local artists, with opening receptions held, usually, the first Saturday morning of the month. The Bill Ryan Memorial Children’s Book Art Gallery features original illustrations by Maine artists.
The library offers free library cards for the residents of Wells, Moody, Ogunquit, Kennebunk, Kennebunkport and York, as well as Wells property owners, employees of the Town of Wells, teachers in the Wells-Ogunquit School District, and student and teachers of the York County Technical College. Visitors are always welcome. Please come by and “check us out!”
