Lifeguards

Lifeguards are on duty weekends from Memorial Day to July 1 and daily thereafter until Labor Day along Wells Beach between the end of Mile Road and the Harbor Jetty. There is also lifeguard service at Drakes Island Beach.

Public Restrooms

Drakes Island (both parking areas), Wells Recreational Area, Atlantic Avenue (Eastern Shore area), Wells Harbor and Wells Beach (Casino Square)

Beach Regulations

  • No alcoholic beverages will be possessed or consumed  on any public beach
  • No littering and all refuse must be placed in containers provided. No household refuse is allowed in beach refuse containers.
  • No burning of wood on the beach without a fire permit from the Fire Chief.
  • No overnight parking (lots close at 11:00pm)  
  • No possession of fireworks
  • No nudity
  • No violation of juvenile tobacco law
  • No unauthorized motor vehicles on beach
  • No criminal trespass on beach property
  • No unattended animals/pets in a vehicle during summer season.

Dogs on the Beach

From June 16 to Sept. 15, no dogs are allowed on beach from 8 am to 6 pm. This is strictly enforced. After 6 pm to 8 am, dogs are allowed on the beach and must be on a leash and under the charge of a responsible person. 

From Sept. 16 to June 15, dogs are allowed and must be on a leash and under the charge of a responsible person. Please keep dogs away from piping plover nests. Pet owners must remove and properly dispose of any feces his/her pet deposits on any beach. Disposal bags and containers are located at many of the beach entrances. An offense carries a penalty besides being a health hazard and socially unacceptable in this area.

This policy does not apply to dogs on property of owner or on another property with the owner’s permission; seeing eye dogs; other dogs assisting an individual with a disability; and working police dogs.

Beach Parking Permits 

Permits are available at Wells Town Hall after May 1 to Wells taxpayers and residents ONLY for $20.00 for the season (2007 prices). Vehicle registration is required to obtain a beach sticker.

  • Non-resident daily passes--$ 15.00

  • Ten-day pass punch card--$50.00 

  • Time Share Week--$20.00

  • Motorcycles (and other two-wheel motorized vehicles)--$5.00

  • Buses/15 passenger van/RV daily passes--$25.00                                                          

Wells Public Parking Lot Attendants

Public parking lots are located at the Gross Lot and the jetty both at Drakes Island, at the Eastern Shore at the end of Atlantic Ave. and near the end of Mile Rd. No RV's or CAMPERS allowed at Mile Road or Drakes Island Jetty. All other lots are attended and in operation 8 am to 3:30 pm, weather permitting, weekends only in June and September, daily from the last week in June through Labor Day.)
